Cheat Day Recipe #1

Yield: 4-7 servings

Total time: 1-2 hours

Steak Ingredients

  • 1 package of steak (cubed is preferred)
  • 1 small chopped or julienned green pepper
  • 1 small chopped onion
  • 1 tsp. of vinegar
  • 4 oz. can of tomato sauce
  • Oregano
  • Garlic powder
  • Adobo seasoning (without pepper)
  • Black pepper
  • Goya sazonador total
  • 2 cups of water
  • Cooking oil

Rice Ingredients

  • 2 cups of white rice
  • 4-5 tbsp. of Goya sofrito
  • 1 can of Goya green pigeon peas
  • ½ chopped green pepper
  • ½ chopped onion
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Fresh cilantro
  • 2 cups of water
  • Cooking oil

Steak Preparation

  1. Marinate meat in oregano, garlic powder, adobo seasoning, and black pepper (the night before)
  2. Tenderize meat with mallet
  3. Cut steak into small strips
  4. Heat oil in stove top pan
  5. Once oil is heated, add steak strips to pan and turn fire up
  6. Cook thoroughly for 10-12 minutes – (See Cook’s Note)
  7. Let some of the liquid that forms in the pan boil out
  8. Add vinegar and 1 cup of water
  9. Turn fire down and allow meat to simmer for 10 minutes
  10. Add 1 cup of water, can of tomato sauce, and pepper and onions
  11. Cover pan and simmer for 20 minutes or until meat is as tender as you’d like
  12. Stir well, make sure all meat is covered in liquid – (See Cook’s Note)

Rice Preparation

  1. Heat oil in separate stove top pan
  2. When oil is hot add onion and green pepper
  3. Heat until onion and green peppers become soft, not crunchy
  4. Add sofrito and stir
  5. Drain and partially rinse pigeon peas
  6. Add minced garlic, tomato sauce, pigeon peas, bay leaf, and rice
  7. Stir well
  8. Add 1 cup of water and sazón
  9. Add 1 cup of water
  10. Stir well and bring to boil
  11. Add cilantro and more water if desired
  12. Cover and let cook for 10 minutes
  13. Stir and flip rice
  14. Cook until done
  15. Plate and serve!

Cook’s Note

  1. Cook meat longer depending on how brown/crisp you prefer your steak.
  2. Add ½ cup of water if needed.
